Scholars at Santa Monica College assert that critical reflection is one key component that helps students transform their service experience into real-world learning. All participating Chicago Youth Service Day groups are encouraged to take time and reflect on their service project after completion and before heading to the CYSD Rally at Grant Park Grove #4. Click on the link to access the 2014 CYSD Service Reflection Packet, or read the instructions on the “Service Reflection” tab at the top of this page.
As you get ready for Chicago Youth Service Day, don’t forget to like the CYSD Facebook page and let us know how your progress is coming. Share photos of your group as you plan your project or prep materials, while you’re volunteering on April 26th or having fun at the CYSD Rally in Grant Park.
Just like last year, we’ll have a photobooth station at the Rally which will feed into the FB page. Take a picture with friends, tag yourself… and leave a comment on our page.
And don’t forget to use the hashtag #CYSD2014 for all your CYSD-related photos.
We hope you can make it to Grove #4 at Grant Park for the CYSD Rally! Student groups executing CYSD service projects are encouraged to join us from 1:00pm – 3:00pm for a family-friendly CYSD Rally. We’ll have live art, breakdancers and djs, a hip hop performance by FM Supreme, photobooth, games and more. Come paint a peace poster or braid a peace bracelet. The Jefferson Awards will present three CYSD Service Awards, selected from registered projects. (click here for more info about registering your project and the awards).
Grove #4 in Grant Park is located at the southwest corner of E Jackson and S Columbus Dr, in the same area as the Seated Lincoln statue.
Students in Lincoln Elementary’s After-School All-Stars’ clubs are getting ready for CYSD, when they’ll partner with Chicago Cares to weed, mulch, plant, paint and compost at two local community gardens. In preparation for the day students discussed personal, community and environmental benefits to community gardening.
Lincoln students also planted vegetables and flowers, then sold their plants during a school band performance. The proceeds were donated to the Lakeview Pantry and Chicago Cares.
